  13. This is a good selection of the "best" sharewares and freewares that are
  14. available from SIMTEL20 (wsmr-simtel20.army.mil) - the largest depository
  15. of MSDOS files - and Garbo (garbo.uwasa.fi) - a good alternative to SIMTEL20.
  16.  
  17. This list contains many commonly-and-frequently-wanted sharewares/freewares/
  18. public domain programs. So, before you post any requests for ftp'able MSDOS
  19. files in comp.archives.msdos.d, comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted or other msdos/pc
  20. newsgroups, please try to read the list first. This will help reduce the
  21. traffic in those groups a bit. Besides you might find some other interesting
  22. stuff here.

  24. As it is more convenient to ftp files from SIMTEL20's mirror sites than
  25. SIMTEL20 itself, so I use the directories of oak.oakland.edu (the most
  26. up-to-date mirror site) instead. Besides, many other SIMTEL20's mirror sites
  27. actually mirror files from oak.oakland.edu.
  28.  
  29. If you want to use the parent site (SIMTEL20) or other mirror sites (e.g.
  30. wuarchive.wustl.edu), please change the path name accordingly. Here is how
  31. to do it:  (`whatever' is the name of subdirectory to be substituted)
  32.  
  33. oak: /pub/msdos/whatever = SIMTEL20: pd1:<msdos.whatever>
  34.                          = wuarchive: /mirrors/msdos/whatever

  36. Please note that garbo is mirrored in N. America at wuarchive. Therefore
  37. garbo: /pc/whatever = wuarchive: /mirrors/garbo.uwasa.fi/whatever

  44. Thanks to all who have helped in improving the list. However, to save
  45. some bandwidth, I do not want to include a long list (over 200 names) of
  46. acknowledgment. I do sincerely thank each and every one of you who has
  47. contributed to this compilation in one way or the other. So, this collection
  48. is the product of the combined wisdom of many netnews readers and archive
  49. users. (yes, errors and shortcomings are my responsibility :-)

  56. the world of archive files is rapidly changing, many entries here may be
  57. dated soon. So, please read the newsgroup comp.archives.msdos.announce or
  58. consult the index files of the archive sites to keep yourself informed of the

  112.    This is a collection of many useful, common, and popular sharewares,
  113.    freewares, and public domain programs ... It will (I hope) give you
  114.    (especially those who are new to the world of archive files) a good idea
  115.    on the range of files and programs you can obtain from major DOS ftp
  116.    sites ...

  118. 2) "useful" ?
  119.    a) most of the programs listed below should enhance DOS in one way or
  120.       another ...
  121.    b) most of them should work on any DOS-based computers (from XTs to
  122.       486s, from monochrome to SVGA, etc ...)
  123.    c) most of them can be run by intuition, i.e. you don't have to read
  124.       the manuals pages after pages to get the programs started ...

  437. the file arctst02.zip (oak: /pub/info) ... And according to Greg Flint who
  438. did the tests: "In general, the fastest archiver and de-archiver were PKZIP
  439. 2.04g and its companion PKUNZIP.  The greatest compression was achieved by
  440. ha 0.98 although it was the second slowest (trailed only by "scrnch")."
